In 1780, Charles William Ferdinand took over the government of the Duchy of Brunswick from his father. He knew his way around Europe and had traveled as far as Italy in his youth. Like his father, he valued Weitsch and admired his undiminished creativity well into his old age. In 1788, he made him “inspector” of the ducal gallery or surveyor of his pictures.
