Mit Hilfe der Infrarotreflektografie konnten bei dem Leinwand- gemälde Querumer Eichenwald mehrere Pentimenti sichtbar gemacht werden (s. Leuchtkasten). Das Gemälde aus dem Jahr 1792 zeigte ursprünglich in der unteren Bildmitte eine nach links gewandte Frau, die hinter den dargestellten Kühen stand. Sie wurde später vom Künstler wieder übermalt. Links hinter der Frauengestalt ist schemenhaft eine männliche Figur zu sehen, die an dem Stamm einer Eiche sitzt. Diese Figur wurde ebenfalls übermalt und die Komposition dadurch verändert.

Completed in 1792, the painting once featured two figures that were later painted over as the artist revised and finalized his composition. In the lower center of the painting, above and behind the cows, we can make out the figure of a standing woman facing to the left. Behind her and further to the left, a male figure can be seen sitting by the trunk of an oak tree.
